What is Trap Music?


Trap is a subgenre that is now starting to gain a lot of momentum and popularity. It involves ominous lyrics, sounds that would incorporate double or may be triple hihats, heavy bases and cinematic strings.




Trap music came around in the 1990s in around southern America. Trap music would because of its bleak and grity lyrics, the lyrics try to portray hardship,(trap) poverty, violence and the very bad experiences that would gave been experienced in the urban inner city surroundings
Trap music would involveTrap music employs a heavy use of multi-layered hard-lined and melodic synthesisers.; crisp, grimy, and rhythmic snares; deep 808 kick drums; double-time, triple-time and similarly divided hi-hats; and a cinematic and symphonic utilization of string, brass, woodwind, and keyboard instruments creating an overall dark, harsh, grim, and bleak atmosphere for the listener. Trap artists would usually have quite a funky or weird name, for example: young thug, young jeezy, fetty wap etc.


To understand it, trap would be broken down like this:
  • 1/3 hip hop (tempo and song structure are similar, most tracks are usually between 70 -110 bpm) – with vocals sometimes pitched down
  • 1/3 Dance Music  – High pitched Dutch synth work, Hardstyle sampling, as well as a plethora of trap remixed of popular EDM songs
  • 1/3 dub (Low frequency focus and strong emphasis on repetitiveness throughout a songS
  • Synthesisers would be used a lot for this type of work. A synthesiser is a  electric musical instrument that would is normally operated by a keyboard producing many different sounds by generating and combining frequencies.Image result for synthesiser
